I've always known them as FNG's

don't worry about the cow... thats a holdover from Crew Dogs.

Well back in the bad old days of quonset huts and wood 2 story hooches in basic training, we called real total newbies (Airman basics etc.) as "pingers" because you could almost hear the hair re-emerging on their shaved heads. FNG was a term for someone who was already somewhat seasoned but transfered into the unit.

Times change. :~)

Yes, we did that too. It usually was for the guys that had just gotten their 3 level. It meant they could get around by themselves but were easily upended by trying to go too fast.

Always known them as FNG for the new guys transfering into the unit and recently the guys from tech school have all been "nubs"
